May is Better Hearing and Speech Month

A young boy speaking letters. Text reads May Is Better Hearing and Speech Month. Communication across the lifespan.Better Hearing and Speech Month

Each May, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) sponsors Better Hearing & Speech Month in an effort to educate the public about hearing and communication disorders. The theme for 2019 is “Communication Across the Lifespan.”

Hearing and communication disorders can affect people of any age, but young children and older people are particularly vulnerable. Hearing problems in children can lead to a delay in the development of language skills and potentially to learning disorders. Hearing impairments among older people may contribute to social isolation as well as the risk of cognitive decline and pathological impairments including dementia.
